Velvet Davenport: When You Are Out

For a state with brutal snowstorms and golf ball-sized hail, Minnesota’s always been an unlikely hotbed for music. Between The Replacements and Prince (more recently, The Hold Steady) it’s spawned some of the biggest and best acts in the Midwest. Velvet Davenport won’t be selling out arenas anytime soon, but they further prove that pop can thrive in sub-zero temperatures.

Fresh off a collab with professional weirdos Ariel Pink/Gary War, the sextet has  a brand new tape out on Moon Glyph.  Entitled Light Blue, it promises to “capture fragments of the human relationship, processing the timeless songwriter trope through a haze that is more crystalline than it is vaporous”. Hm. Featured cut “When You Are Out” hits like a ray of sunshine, drenching “ooh oohs” in sweet 60’s harmonies. It’s a slight change from the Pollard-isms of “Run”, but a welcome one at that.
